San antonio and tona two basque beauties

On this website we have already talked about the Urdaibai Reserve (Biscay), its estuary and coves. Today I am going to show you two more beaches located in this magnificent place, not so secret but beautiful. Despite being very well known and touristy beaches, they are two sandy areas that have preserved their picturesque charm, as you can see in the pictures.

Playa de San Antonio and Playa de Toña belong to the municipality of Sukarrieta (also known as Pedernales; not to be confused with the beach of the same name, located in the Dominican Republic…). They are not very big, but the quality of their water and sand have made them an essential place to visit for lovers of nature, the coast and the sea.

Very well communicated

Sukarrieta is a small village in the region of Busturialdea, located 39 kilometres from Bilbao and a stone’s throw from the town of Bermeo. This picturesque spot can be reached by car, train and bus from both towns. In fact, the train is usually the preferred means of transport for those who live nearby, as its stop is in Itsasbegi (Busturia), very close to the beach. San Antonio Beach, with 200 metres of golden sand, is the most popular beach in the area, and no wonder: it is beautiful, clean and fully equipped.

Family-friendly and peaceful

Playa de Toña, on the other hand, is also very popular despite being somewhat smaller (120 metres long). This beach offers a very beautiful spot, with the island of Txatxarramendi off its coast, protecting it like a guardian. Its calm waters have made it a frequent choice for families. It is very close to the town centre of Sukarrieta, which makes it the ideal beach to spend a fantastic day in the sun and sea, and to round off the day with a pleasant stroll through the town and a good lunch or dinner in one of its excellent restaurants.
