It is not the first time that we talk about this small island in the archipelago known as the ‘Galician Atlantic islands’, and it is a unique and unforgettable place that not many of us know about despite being part of the beach heritage of our country.
The island of Ons is located near Pontevedra and has some dream beaches that you cannot miss if you visit this Galician municipality. A good example and one of our favourites is the beach ‘Ărea dos Cans’, so today we take the opportunity to recommend a visit to the area… Don’t miss what we tell you!
You can tell that this is one more of the protected beaches of the National Maritime-Terrestrial Park of the Atlantic Islands, because its environment is incredibly preserved: fine white sand, turquoise waters, magnificent green vegetation… If it weren’t for the cold waters coming from the Atlantic, Area dos Cans would almost be a Caribbean beach!
The 200-metre-long beach is plenty of space on this island with a lot of tourism and few inhabitants, so you won’t usually have too much trouble finding a spot for your towel and enjoying the magnificent natural environment that surrounds you. However, don’t expect too many comforts because you will hardly find any facilities or services on this beach… It doesn’t even have toilets or showers!
If you want to find this beach you will find it easy, because it is close to the small town of San XoaquĂn de Ons, one of the few (intermittently) inhabited areas of the island.
The islands of the Ons archipelago are just a few kilometres from Pontevedra, so you should not have too much difficulty getting there by ferry from any of the towns or villages in the municipality, such as Bueu, Sanxenxo or Portonovo.
