The coves of the urdaibai reserve

When we talk about coves, we tend to think of the Costa Brava, the Balearic Islands, Sardinia, Corsica… The Cantabrian coast is more associated with large beaches that stretch and shrink with the tide, cold waters, strong waves and exceptional landscapes.

But as in everything, there are exceptions. Because on the Cantabrian coast there are also coves, hidden and adored by lovers of tranquillity, the wildest sea and nudism. The ones I am going to show you today are located in one of the most beautiful corners of the northern Spanish coast: the Urdaibai Reserve.

the Beach of Love

The most hidden cove in the estuary area has a very attractive name: it is called Playa del Amor (Love Beach). The reason is that decades ago there used to be a small cove where couples sought privacy… Although today it has been converted into an esplanade, which by the way enjoys excellent views. Reaching this place is not easy: first you have to go past Guernica, Arteaga and Laida, before reaching Kanala and parking. From the church you can go down to the beach; some people also prefer to go by canoe or kayak, boats that can be rented nearby.

Beware of the tide

Another of the hidden coves that you can visit in the estuary is the one next to the island of San Dinderi: be careful with the tide, as the beach turns into an island as it rises… To find this hidden spot, go as far as Playa de las Colonias, reach the islet on foot and turn left. Finally, in the cliffs of Antzoras we will find another cove, known as Plaitxiki, Carabineros or Antzoras. It is the nudists’ redoubt par excellence. However, if you want to sunbathe, you will need a mat, as it is made of rock…
