Laga the best beach for surfing in autumn

Anyone who thinks that beaches are only for the summer is very mistaken. Autumn is also the perfect time to explore and enjoy some of the best beaches in our country. And if there is one area that is a pleasure to stroll along during this time of year, it is undoubtedly the Cantabrian coast, which offers the sea in all its grandeur.

Today, in particular, we would like to take a walk along Laga beach, one of the most beautiful beaches on the Biscay coast and in the Basque Country. Would you like to join us?

Very popular with surfers

Laga beach is located in Ibarrangelu, near Gernika, 46 kilometres northeast of Bilbao. Located in the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, very close to Elanchove, between the mouth of the Gernika estuary and the Ogoño cape, it is a dune beach, 574 metres long, with fine golden sand. As it is a beach open to the sea, it is very popular with surfers, although canoeing and sailing are also popular.

An equipped beach

The beach is equipped with showers and toilets and during the high season there are lifeguards. You can also enjoy Basque cuisine in the local bars and restaurants. Best of all, however, is that it is an uncrowded beach, fairly quiet and very pleasant.

An exhilarating experience

For the more active, there is no better place to surf in winter. But if you just want to relax, there are few things more relaxing than contemplating the beach from Cape Ogoño, where you can walk up for half an hour from the Elantxobe cemetery.

The best way to get to Laga from Santurtzi or Bilbao is by car, but if you don’t have a car but you do have time, you can go to Gernika by public transport and from there, by bus.
