Tossa de Mar could be one of the most representative towns on the entire Mediterranean coast: beautiful clear waters, green vegetation, a wide range of leisure activities and a good story to tell.
This Girona town is crowned by the Castle of Tossa de Mar, built on a small mountain at the end of the 12th century; it is precisely at the foot of this castle that you will find the Playa Grande (Platja Gran), the most popular bay in the area.
With these spectacular views of the castle and with nature as a backdrop, the beach stretches 385 metres long and 50 metres wide, where hundreds of tourists congregate every year to enjoy the best climate and Mediterranean environment.
Lying on its coarse sand will be comforting as well as practical, and after visiting it you won’t have any discomfort when it comes to removing the fine sand that permeates other beaches from your skin. Like many beaches on the Costa Brava, Platja Gran offers crystal-clear waters in which you can spend hours and hours studying the rich seabed (don’t rule out the possibility of spotting a foot among the little fish, as you certainly won’t be the only swimmer).
Fortunately or unfortunately, this beach is too crowded during the summer months: spending a holiday near Platja Gran is great if you are looking for a lively atmosphere at any time, but it is also true that the overcrowding can make you feel a bit overwhelmed in the middle of the summer season.
However, if it wasn’t for the high tourist demand, we wouldn’t have the possibility of choosing between the great variety of accommodation, restaurants, beach bars, bars, pubs and shops in the area, and if you stay near this beach you can be sure that you won’t lack anything you need.
Of course, all these characteristics deserve to be recognised, which is why the European Community has awarded this beach the Blue Flag for environmental and tourist quality.
