The beach of sancti petri

If you have ever been to the coast of CĂĄdiz, it is more than possible that you have reached the area of San Fernando. The Atlantic landscapes of the province of Cadiz are home to some of the most impressive beaches in our country, one of which is undoubtedly the beach of La Barrosa, which we talked about some time ago on this website.

Located next to it, the beach of Sancti Petri boasts a beauty similar to that of its famous neighbour, but is more unknown and totally natural. Its views and its extension make it a must-see if you are travelling in this Andalusian region.

Sunsets

Sancti Petri Beach begins just beyond the cliffs of La Barrosa; it stretches along two kilometres of coastline and reaches the Sancti Petri channel. One of the main attractions of this beach, apart from its golden sand and dunes, are the views of the islet of Sancti Petri and its fortress. By the way, besides being next to La Barrosa, this place is also close to the incredible beach of San Fernando. And a piece of advice: if you go here, don’t leave before sunset, as the sunsets over the sea are internationally famous.

The islet and the village

At the point where the beach reaches the Sancti Petri channel is the town’s marina, a perfect place for nautical activities where you can rent diving equipment, kayaks… Or just have a beer or an ice-cream. Another good idea is to visit the islet of Sancti Petri, whose 18th century fortress has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest (and with beaches like the one in this photo). Here, hundreds of years ago, there was a temple dedicated to Hercules, although the island still has a more ancient tradition: the temple was originally dedicated to Melkart, a divinity of fire from the mythology of the city of Tyre. And if you like abandoned villages, don’t miss the village of Sancti Petri, a former settlement of tuna fishermen that is now empty. It is an evocative and nostalgic place, full of charm.
