It is possible to enjoy the beach at any time of the year, and if not, just ask the surfers. Especially for them, and for those who want to get started in this sport, we recommend the beach of Zarautz, in GuipĂșzcoa (Basque Country), a small town where the surfing atmosphere can be felt in any corner not only of its coast, but also of the town itself.
Thanks to the number of breaks on its beach, which at two kilometres long is the longest on the Basque coast, Zarautz has become a reference point for surfing in Spain: major surfing events are held here every year. There are also more than five surfing, windsurfing and bodyboarding schools in the area.
The area is recommended by surfers especially for the extraordinary waves that surfers can enjoy for more than 300 days a year, which can reach up to three metres in height, as well as for the moderate (but bearable) temperatures that are maintained throughout the year.
Despite its special attraction for the surfing public, Zarautz beach is also a highly valued and popular destination for other types of tourists, who come to the town to enjoy the coquettish golden sandy beach, characterised by awnings and beach chairs. The beach, surrounded by a beautiful green landscape, is framed by a long promenade, where visitors will find excellent restaurants, bars and pubs where they can have fun, relax and enjoy the best Basque gastronomy (the famous Karlos Arguiñano restaurant is located here). Another of the advantages of visiting this beach is that in the surrounding area, visitors will find a wide range of accommodation options in hotels, hostels and campsites, with prices within everyone’s reach.
